Granite/Natural Stone Countertops

The most common types of natural stone slab countertops are made from granite, marble, limestone, soapstone, slate and quartz. These are quarried in one single slab if possible and then cut and polished before being installed in your home. Natural stone slabs come in various thicknesses and colors. Each of the different types of stone have different qualities and characteristics. For example, soapstone is smooth and warm to the touch, while marble is cool, yet boasts stunning depth of beauty in its crystalline veined appearance. Natural slabs of stone are almost always one of the more expensive countertop surfaces. The number of different colors and patterns of natural stone is limitless.

How much does granite weigh?

30 mm thick granite weighs 18 lbs/sq.ft. Granite is heavy and will require proper equipment to transport, fabricate and install. You should be sure that your room has adequate structural support before you install granite.

Do granite seams show?

Because granite is a natural material and is mined from the quarry in blocks usually no more than 10 ft long, you will most likely end up with seams. Also, because granite is sold in rectangular pieces, you may want to use seams to reduce your costs, such as in a U or L shaped kitchen. The visibility of seams will depend on the granularity, color and pattern. The seams are joined with epoxy that is mixed with the color that matches the stone. If properly done, the joined area is smoothed, leaving only a very thin line visible.
